The Underworld: Evolution Concerns
|||||rocket collecting: by Mila.||]|
OMG. I am so very very sad over evolution! I absolutely adored the first movie becaues it was subtle. There was a tension that carried the movie through its ending. And while I have to admit there were a couple of points where they could have done better, I felt that the storr really worked well. The second movie just totally feels like it has nothing to do with teh first movie!
Did I mention it made me sad? I had such high expectations, like what would Marcus do? Would he be on one side or the other? What does this mean for the war? None of these issues were addresssed! Plus I think Selene hopped into bed with Michael a little too quickly for my character tastes. How do you go from not even kissing the guy after a traumatic event to sleeping with him after being a little burnt. There were like fifty thousand different story lines that they just sorta made up on the spot. And did anyone else laugh when they kissed at the end? Or when Michael just kept breaking paint buckets with his fingernails? Had he not heard of a paint brush or even a rag? AHHH!
Okay, Breathe. I'm done, I swear. I just had to get that off of my chest. Sorry for the prolonged rant. My name is Specks and I am a rantaholic.
PS: I really loved the soundtrack though. And I must admit the sex scene was beautifully shot. Very tasteful.
The novelization was better for character development. The supporting cast got shafted. Alexander Corvinus (Derek Jacobi, in particular, was a study in how to do more with less), Lucian, and Marcus are my favorite Underworld characters. Any one or combination of those three could sustain an entire franchise. Instead we get the decidely uninteresting leads.
Lucien, Marcus, and Alexander Corvinus are also my favorite characters, in addition to Viktor.
Were Selene and Michael prominent through the novel, or were the books mostly dealing with Corvinas, Lucian and Marcus? I personally would be very interested in reading a deeper character study of Marcus.
The novel was Movie Script Plus. Therefore, it was prominently Michael & Selene. But, various characters, including Marcus and Alexander Corvinus got development through internal monologues during their scenes in the story.
" ... like what would Marcus do? Would he be on one side or the other? What does this mean for the war? None of these issues were addresssed!"
My understanding is that Marcus decided the war didn't matter ... the only thing that mattered was his desire to help his brother.
As for the war ... with both Lucian and Viktor dead, is there even a war anymore? I'm hoping further chapters will explore this.
One would think that there would still be a war since, I am sure, there are vampires out there with Selene's former frame of thought: you know, kill lycans because they need to be exterminated. So even if it had started as a personal war, it has turned into an internalized hatred. Therefore, no matter what, both sides would still hate each other right? I just wish they had elaborated more. What do you think?
... in the first film, I got the impression that the Death Dealers were the only vampires engaging in the war against the Lycans (under orders from the elders), while the other vampires merely lounged around while others did the dirty work.
I wonder if there are any Death Dealers left?
I also wonder about the other vampires in the New World Coven (in America?).
It certainly seems likely that both vampires and Lycans would fear/hate one another after such a long war.
